SPRING’S RHUBARB

The rest of the garden hasn’t been tilled,
but spring has arrived and God has willed
that the rhubarb grow;
so now their leaves
are beginning to show.

Tightly curled, they greet the world
as they push through winter weary ground.
Some, more eager than the rest.
Some not yet to be found.

Their leaves will open and rise on stalks
of rosy-reddish hue
until they are stripped and thrown away,
poisonous to me and you.

But the stalks remain
and we are treated again
to rhubarb cobbler and pie
and rhubarb sauce and muffins
For which you’d gladly die
